Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

One of the most powerful tools for cellular repair, recovery and resilience available in our clinical practice in Sandyford, Dublin 18.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Thereapy and how does it help the body heal?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves breathing high-concentration oxygen inside a pressurised chamber.

At increased atmospheric pressure, oxygen dissolves directly into the blood plasma at significantly higher concentrations than normal breathing allows. This oxygen-rich environment reaches tissues and cells throughout the body, including areas with reduced circulation, and supports a wide range of biological repair and recovery processes.

At Luma, HBOT is integrated into our programmes as both a standalone therapy and as part of broader treatment protocols for painm, sports recovery, inflammation, fertility and general health.

Under normal conditions, oxygen is carried almost entirely by red blood cells. At increased pressure, oxygen also dissolves directly into blood plasma, cerebrospinal fluid, lymphatic fluid and interstitial fluid. This significantly increases the oxygen available to every tissue in the body, including areas that may be poorly perfused or under inflammatory stress.

The body responds to this environment in several ways:

  • Tissue oxygenation improves throughout the body, including in areas of injury or chronic inflammation where circulation is compromised.
  • The immune response is supported, with HBOT shown to enhance the activity of white blood cells and support the body's ability to manage infection and inflammation.
  • New blood vessel formation is stimulated in areas where circulation has been reduced, supporting longer-term improvements in tissue health.

Why hyperbaric oxygen therapy works, and how it's integrated into Luma's programmes.

Enhanced tissue oxygenation
By dissolving oxygen directly into blood plasma, HBOT delivers oxygen to tissues that red blood cells alone may not reach effectively. This is particularly significant for areas of chronic inflammation or compromised circulation, where healing has been limited by inadequate oxygen supply.

Angiogenesis and circulation repair
HBOT stimulates the formation of new blood vessels in areas of reduced circulation. Over a programme of sessions, this supports lasting improvements in blood flow, not just temporary increases during the session itself.

Stem cell mobilisation
Research shows HBOT significantly increases stem cell mobilisation from bone marrow. These stem cells contribute to tissue repair, immune regulation and regeneration, making HBOT a meaningful addition to recovery and longevity programmes.

Anti-inflammatory action
HBOT modulates inflammatory signalling throughout the body. For conditions maintained by chronic inflammation, a structured programme of HBOT sessions supports a meaningful reduction in the overall inflammatory burden.

Combination with other therapies
Within Luma's multi-therapy programmes, HBOT is used alongside approaches including red light therapy, PEMF and nutritional support. The oxygen-rich environment created by HBOT enhances the effectiveness of other cellular therapies delivered in the same programme, particularly those targeting mitochondrial function and tissue repair.

What conditions does HBOT support?

Recovery

Post-surgical recovery, sports injuries and soft tissue damage, where increased oxygen delivery supports more complete and efficient healing.

Chronic conditions

Conditions involving persistent inflammation, compromised circulation or slow tissue repair, where systemic oxygenation helps create a more favourable biological environment.

Fertility support

As part of our fertility programmes, HBOT supports the reduction of oxidative stress in reproductive tissue and improves the pelvic oxygen environment ahead of conception or assisted reproductive treatment.

Endometriosis

For clients managing endometriosis, HBOT is used within our programme to support tissue health following surgery and to reduce the oxidative stress associated with chronic pelvic inflammation.

General health and longevity

For people focused on long-term cellular health and resilience, regular HBOT sits within our wellness programmes as a tool for maintaining the oxygenation and regenerative capacity that healthy ageing depends on.

Neurological recovery and cognitive support

For people managing cognitive fatigue, post-viral conditions or neurological recovery, HBOT supports cerebral oxygenation and the reduction of neuroinflammation.

What to expect during a HBOT session?

HBOT sessions at Luma take place in a comfortable, pressurised chamber. Sessions typically last between 60 and 90 minutes, during which you breathe high-concentration oxygen through a mask or hood.

Most people find sessions relaxing. You may notice a mild sensation of pressure in your ears during pressurisation, similar to descending in an aircraft, which resolves quickly.

A standard programme of HBOT at Luma is typically structured over a defined course of sessions, with the frequency and duration tailored to your specific goals and condition. Our clinical team monitors your response throughout and adjusts the programme accordingly.

Benefits build progressively over a course of sessions rather than from a single treatment. Most people notice meaningful changes in energy, recovery and how they feel within the first few weeks of a structured programme.

Key Benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Restores Cellular Energy and Function

Gentle red light penetrates tissue at a cellular level, stimulating mitochondria to boost ATP production - essential for healing, regeneration, and overall function.

Balances Hormones and Regulates Cycles

By supporting the endocrine system and reducing oxidative stress, light therapy encourages more regular cycles, improved hormonal harmony, and reduced PMS symptoms.

Improves Circulation and Tissue Repair

Laser therapy increases microcirculation, bringing more oxygen and nutrients to damaged or stagnant areas - supporting faster tissue repair and reducing inflammation.

Relieves Pain and Reduces Inflammation

Photobiomodulation is clinically shown to reduce inflammation, swelling, and pain - making it ideal for joint issues, chronic pain, and injury recovery.

Supports Women at Every Life Stage

Whether you’re navigating perimenopause, managing hormonal imbalances in your 20s–30s, or recovering after childbirth, red light therapy offers a supportive, non-invasive approach to women’s health. It helps ease menopause symptoms, boost vitality, and support natural healing for long-term wellbeing.

Calms the Nervous System and Eases Stress

Laser therapy helps downregulate an overactive stress response, improving vagal tone and promoting a calm, balanced state that supports both physical and emotional wellbeing.

What the Research Shows

Living proof that your biological age doesn’t have to be your destiny

“After years of heartache, after one month using the GigaLaser, it showed four, then seven follicles where there were none. I am living proof that your biological age doesn’t have to be your destiny, LLLT gave me back control. A million percent I’d recommend the GigaLaser to anyone with POI or poor ovarian response.”Customer feedback from GB

Zero Known Side Effects

Multiple reviews confirm PBM is well-tolerated with minimal to no side effects. Light therapy used in fertility has shown no adverse effects when administered correctly.

I couldn’t say enough positive things

“I couldn’t say enough positive things about Luma health and the team. I’ve been doing GigaLaser for a couple of weeks, and I live a bit of a distance away from the clinic but the team has gone out of their way to accommodate my requests.”
